Becoming a Member
Membership of The Chartered Institute of Marketing is open to anyone working or interested in marketing. The different grades reflect the level of experience and qualifications in marketing. No matter what stage of your marketing career you are at, there is a level of membership for you.
There are 6 types of membership available - Affiliate Member (Professional), Affiliate Member (Studying), Associate, Chartered Marketer, Member and Fellow.

Affiliate Professional
Affiliate Professional is open to professionals who are actively engaged in or considering a career in marketing, or have an active interest in marketing.

Associate (ACIM)
You may be eligible to become an Associate member (ACIM) if you have either of the following academic qualifications:

CIM Professional Postgraduate Diploma or university degree majoring in marketing

Equivalent level diploma majoring in marketing

Equivalent level marketing professional body examination or another academic award in a relevant discipline

Chartered Marketer
Achieve the ultimate status of Chartered Marketer, awarded exclusively by The Chartered Institute of Marketing in recognition of outstanding practical experience and expertise. It can only be held by Members (MCIM) and Fellows (FCIM) who are committed to continuing professional development.

Member (MCIM)
You may be eligible to become a Member (MCIM) if you have either of the following academic qualifications:

CIM Professional Postgraduate Diploma or university degree majoring in marketing

Equivalent academic award majoring in marketing
And practical experience:

Three years' experience in marketing (whether in practice or teaching) including one year in a management role

You must be employed in a marketing-related role at the time of your application

Fellow (FCIM)
You may be elected to Fellowship after a period of membership or upon entry to The Institute provided you meet Member (MCIM) criteria.
In both cases you will need a strong marketing background (circa 15 years), and must have held a role such as Chief Executive, Executive Director, Senior Marketing Executive, Professor of Marketing, Senior Academic or Senior Marketing Consultant for a minimum period of five years

As of 1 July 2008, the membership fee for Fellowship (FCIM) will be £170
UK/Western Europe Membership - £160
International Applicants - Standard Rate - £130

This grade of membership is not available to those joining online.
Guidelines for Approval
The applicant must be a person of integrity who has a proven record of expertise, experience and success in Marketing Management, Marketing Education or Marketing Consultancy.
- Marketing Management
The marketing operation should be broadly based across several areas of marketing or be a specialist in any one area, examples of which are listed below. The direct personal involvement and responsibility of the applicant in the creation and implementation of the company marketing plans must be established to the satisfaction of The Institute.

- Marketing Education
Senior Academics may be elected to Fellowship providing they have been responsible for the development and management of marketing tuition programmes as a major part of their duties in a higher education establishment providing courses at first degree standard in which marketing has been the major subject of study. They should also be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to marketing education, e.g. publication in refereed journals.
Academic criteria may include evidence of management and links with industry, e.g. background information on Institution including size and status.

- Marketing Consultancy
Marketing Consultants may be elected to Fellowship providing they have been operating in this capacity for a minimum of five years and can provide evidence of having successfully developed their own business during this period of time, or having gained their experience with a major marketing practice.
A high proportion of projects undertaken must be marketing based and the client base should include high profile companies.
Experience gained in marketing prior to becoming a consultant must meet the criteria outlined for Marketing Management.
