How do I register?

You only need to register once and this should only take a couple of minutes to complete.

To register, please select the Login/register text on the top-left-hand side of The Institute banner/header. The next page will allow you to specify whether you wish to register as a Guest, Studying or Professional Member of The Institute and allow you to fill in your relevant details.

Fields marked with a * are obligatory and must be completed.

Please note that if you are already a Member and wish to create your online account, you should select the "Already a member?" option. You will need your Membership Number and Authorisation Key in order to create your account.

NB: The authorisation key may be changed from time to time for security purposes. This will not affect those customers who have already registered on the site. If you have not yet registered and you do encounter a message to say 'the authorisation key has not been recognised' you can request confirmation of this via the membership services team.

Making the most of our resources

The Institute's website has a wide range of resources and information available for its members and website users. Read the instructions below to ensure that you are getting the most out of what’s available.

Downloading PDFs

PDF stands for portable document format. To read our PDF files you'll need Acrobat Reader 4.0™ or above. We think most of you will have this but if not you can download it for FREE today.

Visually impaired visitors accessing this website using screen reading technology will require a PDF converter - download Access Adobe.

Once you have Acrobat Reader installed, simply double-click on the file you wish to view and it will automatically open in the program. You can also save these files by right clicking on the filename and selecting "Save Target As".

I'm logged in but I'm having problems accessing EBSCO

If you receive an error message when trying to connect to an EBSCOhost product, it may be caused by software on your computer which blocks referring URLs. The most common cause of this is Norton IS software and to resolve the issue you may need to alter your settings. Visit the Ebsco support website for further details. Please note that The Institute takes no responsibility for your decision to change your settings.

Following successful completion of your assessment entry, an email confirming your bookings will be sent to you within 48 hours.

Why do I need to register on the site to enter for assessments?

The Institute uses a combination of membership numbers and authorisation keys to ensure privacy of our member data records.

Registering only takes five minutes and is a one-off process. View our "How to join" page for details on how to register (see related links).

Problems accessing online application facilities?

Some customers have reported that when they click on the links to make online applications - either to join or to enter for assessments - nothing happens. This may be due to pop-up window blocking services on your PC.

To complete our online forms, you need to ensure that pop-ups are enabled for cim.co.uk. Those customers who've updated their settings to allow pop-ups have found this resolves the issue.

If you are accessing the internet from an office PC we recommend you speak to your IT department.

If you are accessing the internet on a personal PC we suggest you check your internet browser and/or tools associated with it or Anti-Virus Software to see if this is blocking pop-up windows. For example:

  • Google, Yahoo and MSN toolbars allow you to accept/decline pop-ups. Please see the individual help files associated with these products.
  • Norton Anti-Virus software. For help on amending Norton settings and enabling Pop-up windows view the Symantec website.
  • Windows Microsoft XP (Service Patch 2) automatically disables pop-ups. For help on amending Microsoft XP settings view the Microsoft Help and Support website.
