Earning CPD hours
From attending industry events and training courses to mentoring employees and reading industry publications, there is a wide range of activities that can earn you CPD hours. Choose a qualifying activity listed below to find out more about the CPD hours you can earn.
Notes

The total amount of combined hours claimed under categories 7, 8, 9 and 10 should not exceed 28 hours annually

Where study time is in excess of 35 hours, additional time may not be carried forward as a credit for the following year’s CPD

Please keep copies of your record card and supporting evidence

The maximum number of hours that may be claimed is 3.5 hours per half day and seven hours per full day

All supporting evidence must state your name and the date that the activity took place
1: Qualification studies
All qualifications awarded by The Chartered Institute of Marketing are eligible for CPD hours, as are all other marketing, sales or business-related qualifications awarded by Government-recognised educational institutions.
Evidence required: A copy of your qualification certificate or a letter of attendance signed by your tutor.
Maximum hours that may be claimed under this category: 35
2: Short training courses and workshops
Training courses and workshops aimed at developing your marketing or business knowledge and competence are eligible for CPD hours. They can also take the form of distance learning training programmes.
Evidence required: A certificate of attendance or a signed letter of attendance from your course tutor.

3: Language training
Recognised awards that will benefit your professional development are eligible for CPD hours.
Evidence required: A copy of your certificate, letter of attendance signed by your tutor, or a letter from your employer stating the training is useful to your work.

4: In-company development
The following are eligible for CPD hours:

Training undertaken as part of a planned, in-company development scheme

Promotion and appraisal — recognition will be given for your development within an organisation for which up to eight hours may be claimed

Project work — company-specific projects to recognise the interaction between marketing and other business disciplines in support of the organisation’s strategy. For example, cross-organisational working, launch of a new website or new market entry plan
Evidence required: A certificate of achievement or a letter from your employer and, where appropriate, an outline of the project(s).

5: Imparting knowledge
The writing of published books, papers, journals or articles for sales or management-related subjects can qualify you for CPD hours. Other methods of imparting knowledge will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Evidence required: Copies of books, papers, journals or articles.
Maximum hours that may be claimed under this category: 14, or 35 for books
6: Mentoring
We recognise the value of members passing on their knowledge to others. The following activities are eligible for CPD hours:

Mentoring/coaching others to allow for the effective dissemination of knowledge

Part-time teaching by non-academics
NB. Consultancy work and projects undertaken on behalf of clients are excluded.
Evidence required: A letter from the individual being mentored or from the educational establishment.

7: Conferences and exhibitions
The following are eligible for CPD hours:

Organised by The Chartered Institute of Marketing

Conferences or exhibitions accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing

Organised by other marketing or job/industry-related organisations
Evidence required: Your booking/confirmation letter or name badge.
Maximum hours that may be claimed under this category: 10
8: Contribution to the community
The following are eligible for CPD hours:

Our national, regional, branch and industry group committees/working parties

Committees of other marketing organisations
-
Job-related committees outside your own organisation, eg trade association

Society contributions such as charity work and School Governor
Evidence required: A copy of the minutes or a letter/email confirmation from the organisers.

9: Private study
We define private study as learning new skills and/or improving marketing/management performance and knowledge.
The following are eligible for CPD hours:

Online research, including information extracted from our marketing resources

Learning new job-related skills

Reading marketing and sales-related publications
Evidence required: Where applicable, evidenced by noting the source, date and documenting the relevance of the information obtained.
Maximum hours that may be claimed under this category: 8
10: Development events
Marketing or business-related participative development events and seminars, but excluding social events and meetings that form part of your normal job role.
The following are eligible for CPD hours:

CPD events organised by our branches or Market Interest Groups

Events run by other marketing or business-related organisations, including those from other professional bodies
Evidence required: A certificate of attendance or a copy of agenda/minutes of meetings.
