Types of membership

Whether you're starting out or already in senior management, our range of membership means that there is a level to suit everyone.

Grades are awarded on a combination of experience and qualifications. The letters after your name demonstrate where you are in your career. And, as you progress, you can apply for a membership upgrade, to ensure your level always reflects your current position.

Affiliate (Professional)

Affiliate Professional membership is open to anyone who is actively engaged in or considering a career in marketing, is studying marketing or has an active interest in the marketing industry.

Membership fees

Annual membership fee, prices effective until June 2013

In order to study for one of our qualifications, you will need to apply as an Affiliate (Studying) member.

Accelerated route
If you are entitled to exemptions from either the Professional Certificate in Marketing or the Professional Diploma in Marketing or both, you will be charged an exemption fee of �10 per unit (there are 4 units per qualification).

Associate (ACIM)

You may be eligible for Associate (ACIM) membership if you have any of the following academic qualifications:

CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing.
CIM Professional Postgraduate Diploma or university degree majoring in marketing (copy of transcript will be required).
CIM Chartered Postgraduate Diploma.
Equivalent-level diploma majoring in marketing.
Equivalent-level marketing professional body examination or other academic award in a relevant discipline.

Next steps

Member (MCIM)

You may be eligible to become a Member (MCIM) if you have the academic qualifications eligible to become an Associate (ACIM) as well as the following practical experience:

A minimum of three years in marketing (whether practice or teaching), including one year in a management role.
You must be employed in a marketing-related role at the time of your application.

If you have considerable marketing experience at a senior marketing level or consultancy and at the time of application are holding an appointment at or near board level, but no formal marketing qualifications, you may apply for membership under the Senior Management Entry Scheme. Please apply using the professional application form.

Next steps

Fellow (FCIM)

You may be elected to Fellowship (FCIM) after a period of membership or upon entry to The Chartered Institute of Marketing - provided you meet Member (MCIM) criteria.

In either case, you will need a strong marketing background, and must have held a role such as Chief Executive, Executive Director, Senior Marketing Executive, Professor of Marketing, Senior Academic or Senior Marketing Consultant, for at least fifteen years.

Chartered Marketer

Chartered Marketer status is the mark of an up to date, experienced and qualified marketing professional.

It is marketing's highest grade and is awarded exclusively by The Chartered Institute of Marketing in recognition of outstanding practical experience and expertise.

To be eligible for Chartered Marketer status, you must either be a Member (MCIM) or a Fellow (FCIM) and have satisfied the requirements of the Chartered CPD Programme for two consecutive years.

There is no additional fee to become a Chartered Marketer.
