Your first marketing role is an important stepping stone, but knowing when it's time to move on can be key to long-term career growth. This article explores the signs that you've outgrown your current position, from limited learning opportunities to a lack of progression or new challenges. It also offers practical advice on evaluating your next move and making a confident transition to the next stage of your marketing career.

One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make in your marketing career is knowing when it’s time to leave a role. It sounds simple in theory, but when you’re faced with the decision, it can actually be quite difficult to navigate.

For many of us, myself included, there comes a point where we start questioning whether we’re still learning and progressing, or whether we’re just staying out of comfortability or even fear of the unknown. In the early stages of your career, it can feel like you’re constantly trying to balance sticking it out for the opportunity you’ve got with the desire to keep progressing.

The challenge is that there isn’t really a perfect moment to move on. No one tells you you’re ready, and it can feel overwhelming to even consider the logistics of looking for a new opportunity whilst in your current role.

So how do you know when it’s time to move on, and how do you start the process?

You’re no longer learning

One of the biggest signs you’re ready to move on is because you’ve stopped learning, or your days and weeks start to feel repetitive.

Marketing is an industry that is constantly changing. New platforms pop up, consumer behaviors shift, and technology evolves every day. While we can’t expect every day to be fast paced and super exciting, you should feel like you’re developing your skills, knowledge, or experience over time.
